Understanding When it’s Time for Orthotics (Custom Inserts)

Understanding When it’s Time for Orthotics (Custom Inserts)
admin

Orthotics are orthopedic custom shoe inserts. They are super useful, but they should be prescribed. Otherwise, they can be painful and lead to serious injury. Many mail-order custom made inserts result in broken foot bones. Many people mistakenly believe they can help. But when incorrectly used, you will end up at the doctor.

Why are Orthotics Useful?

Orthotics are like prescription medications. They are to be used when your doctor advises. Specific custom made inserts also need to be used. When used unnecessarily, they are dangerous. Over-the-counter-orthotics are common. But, they can exacerbate pre-existing conditions. People with certain conditions are more at risk. These include people with:

  • Heel pain
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Lower back problems
  • Knee problems
  • Flat feet
  • Overly high arches

A common mistake is buying orthotics to serve as shock absorbers. Athletes do this, but it is horrible for your feet. You should not be using custom inserts unless your doctor advises you to. Unnecessary use is cause for severe pain and severe injury.

Will New Orthotics Correct My Foot Problems?

Orthotics cannot correct foot or ankle problems. They are designed to stabilize joints and reduce pain. They also provide better positioning and prevent deformities. Custom made ones will relieve pressure from joints. As a result, foot, knee, and even back pain is reduced. These are markedly different from those you can buy at a store.

If you want to use orthotics, talk to your doctor. You need to have a good reason to wear them. A podiatrist is the best professional to reach out to. They will discuss your symptoms and evaluate your gait and activity level. Podiatrists also look at the overall biomechanics of your hip and knee. X-rays are also taken to identify any joint damage.

Is Custom Inserts Best?

After careful evaluation, custom orthotics are the best option. When prescribed and worn correctly, they are super helpful. Always follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and always stay on track when it’s time for new orthotics.
